Why does Circles work?

If we are to end poverty, the community must commit to the goal of building an effective bridge for anyone to use out of poverty. Community leaders must succeed at every step of the process in educating and supporting people from birth to economic stability. (See Bridges Steering Committee Continuum).

In order to gain the community’s commitment, Circles makes a commitment to help a group of families completely out of poverty and to change the community based on what is discovered to work, and to hinder the progress of families.

In order to get out of poverty, people need both education and social capital (people who can offer information, contacts, and support). Circles connects people in relationship across income lines and helps develop clear goals for education and stable income.

Circles focuses on supporting families to help themselves completely out of poverty. We encourage the family to take charge of their destiny and put them in charge by asking them to be a “Circle Leader.” The friendship and commitment found in Circles provides solutions to keep people on a positive track towards their goals.

Circles puts people who want out of poverty in charge of their own destiny

“The key strength of this model is that Circles Leaders are at the CENTER of the program. This is essential to planning and it is vital to include them at each step along the way of the process.”
Chris Porter, East Syracuse, New York

Move the Mountain provides a high level of training and technical assistance for all aspects of your Circles initiative to ensure your success. Communities that maintain a high fidelity to the model will get the results they want.

Move the Mountain is an effective coach to communities.

MTM is “open and available. The conference calls with coaches have been extremely helpful, as has the assistance with grant ideas.”
Donna Potts, Pensacola, Florida

Circles boosts self-confidence and helps people secure promotions and raises:

“There are a lot of underlying benefits to the program, including increased self-confidence for participants. It really positions people to be more marketable and gives them vital connections…One Circles Leader was recently voted employee of the year at her company; others have received promotions and raises...and they think that the training and Circles initiative have a lot to do with their successes.”
Holly Fuller, Longview, Texas
